A Cup of Coffee - Making a Meal Out of It. Must Read.
Next time you’re thinking of buying a cup of coffee you may want to think twice before you pick up your next Starbucks’. Some shocking coffee facts were published in a consumer group report this week that made horrifying reading.
With the number of sophisticated coffees on the rise and larger cup sizes now standard, it means coffee house chains like Starbucks’ are regularly selling drinks that now contain well over 500 calories each.
Starbucks’ tops the list as the worst high fat milk offender according to a report published by Which? Consumer group in the United Kingdom.
Let’s take a closer look at a few coffee facts highlighted in their report:
A Starbucks’ large white chocolate mocha with cream:
2 shots espresso - 11 calories
22 grams of whipped cream - 101 calories
85 grams of white chocolate mocha syrup - 132 calories
Full-fat milk - 384 calories
TOTAL: 628 calories
Wow! That’s nearly a third of the recommended daily amount for women, and a quarter of the amount for men.
A Starbucks’ large caffĂ© latte comes in at 341 calories and contains 11.2 grams of saturated fat, which is more than half the 20 grams recommended daily maximum to consume.
Truth be told, Starbucks’ started to introduce semi-skimmed milk last year, but a large percentage of coffee houses continue to serve high calorie drinks that are like a meal.
Here are some more random examples…
CaffĂ© Nero’s medium cup mocha with whipped cream made with semi-skimmed milk contains 326 calories.
Costa Coffee’s medium cup of mocha flake made with whole milk, cream and flake contains 297 calories.
So, the next time you pick up a coffee on the way to work, just think about how many calories you could be consuming, it could be more of a meal than you realize.
