I happened to listen to a network marketing team training call held on Talkshoe at the weekend. It was that which inspired me to write this post on generating mlm leads …or is it a rant? Well, I’ll let you decide.

The call got started with 15 minutes of upbeat network marketing motivation talk. Then a few people delivered their mlm success testimonials with real passion. Everything was going fine. The host then moved on to devote the last part of the call to a back to basics network marketing training session.

Yes folks! Doing more of the fundamental basics is very important for the growth of your network marketing business, but when using out dated strategies, the end result for a large number of listeners will be yet more disappointment.

It always makes me so angry when I hear people say, “go make a list of all your family, friends and acquaintances”. Yeah right! What planet are these guys on? With caller-ID even getting through is a challenge …and playing phone tag isn’t that productive either.

Hurrah for the Internet! :)

Prospecting Plan A …the List!

Spare yourself the grief, rejection and friend loss - don’t write the list!

In my search for success in network marketing I have joined several companies. I still get paid a residual income from the very first company I joined over a decade ago. But as I joined each company, the advice handed out was the same. I was instructed to go make a list of 100 family, friends and acquaintances using a memory jogger.

Personally, I feel very uncomfortable calling people that I love and selling them on the network marketing idea, that if they go do the same, buy a distributorship, call a few buddies, then they are going to be able to quit their jobs and work from home in a matter of months.

Fact is, from what I have learnt from being active in the network marketing industry, to make a consistent 6 figure income requires a professional level of dedication. The same level of dedication that you would expect to put in to achieve that income success in any other industry.

The reality is, most people work their network marketing business like a hobby, then go spend themselves out of business doing things that might have worked back in the early 90’s but not today. The end result, they don’t even cover their expenses.

Heck, I don’t know about your peer group, but my Uncle Bob, my Auntie Pat, my window cleaner, or even the girl with the beautiful smile (she knows who she is! ;) on the till down at my local swimming pool are not in my target market.

Why?

Let me explain… the question I ask myself is, “do they really have the entrepreneur mindset?” Entrepreneurs are by nature self-starters, they are driven, they don’t stop until they succeed no matter what. They have that wanna, the Rhino spirit.

Now, the point I am trying to make here is that by writing my list, I am trying to find an Eagle in a chicken coup. Eagles don’t hang out in chicken coups. So why would I waste my time and money searching there?

But here’s the other thing I hate about the list, I am passing the responsibility for my early success to those I love and care about. Kinda puts my friendships on a sticky wicket don’t you think? Be prepared for that awkward question before they hang-up, “is that why you called me?”

Humm.. Dan Kennedy’s quote on taking responsibility,

“You will continue to be unsuccessful as long as you depend on others to make you successful”.

Prospecting Plan B …the Lead Packs

Ah!.. It sounds like the perfect solution to the problem. An endless supply of people who actually want to talk to me about my business. And my upline just so happens to know the best lead source in the universe …and who, by some amazing cosmic coincidence happens to be a close friend of theirs. Ha!

Here’s the reality. BEWARE! Before you go spending your cash buying mlm lead packs, or if you have already purchased some mlm leads and are finding you are not getting anywhere, you must understand how these mlm leads are generated and resold …and resold …and resold!

So, is there an alternative to Plan A or Plan B?

Humm… a pro coach sounds expensive?

I suppose I must be a hopeless dimwit, especially if I need to pay a couple of grand to get an expert to mentor me through the process that seems a breeze for everyone else out there.
